Happy cloud earnings week ☁️
Alphabet’s Google Cloud reported $8.4B in revenue, slowing to 22% growth YoY.
Amazon’s AWS reported $23.1B in revenue, up 12% YoY, but less than half of its growth rate from this time last year.
Microsoft Intelligent Cloud segment reported $24.3B in revenue, up 19% YoY with revenue from Azure alone jumping 29%.
While all three companies blame overall stalled cloud growth to "customer optimization efforts," aka cost cutting, the standout winner this week is Azure.
Azure showed strong growth among AWS and Google Cloud’s continued declines (see the charts below), fueled in large part to better-than-expected AI services sales. Azure's OpenAI Service grew to 18,000 customers (up from 11,000 customers in July) and its AI-enabled GitHub Copilot feature grew to over 1 million users (up 40% QoQ). But you have to spend money to make money - Microsoft’s investment in AI was reflected in its capital expenditures, which jumped 70% YoY to a record $11.2B.
Also on the AI front, Databricks acquired data replication startup Arcion for $100M to allow customers to natively ingest data from various data sources. Databricks is chalking up to be quite acquisitive as this news follows their recent $1.3B acquisition of Mosaic ML, an AI infrastructure startup specializing in training LLMs, underscoring their determination in becoming the center of the growing AI market.
