Enterprise Weekly #466: Llama 🦙🦙🦙, The LLM Adoption Curve, and More

Some more major AI news dropped this week. Meta released the newest and most powerful additions to its AI ecosystem:
Meta Llama 3 - The first two models in 8B and 70B parameters in the next generation of their Llama model. In initial benchmarks, Llama 3 set a new standard for open-source models at those scales, outperforming peer models Gemma, Mistral, Claude 3, and Gemini. Additionally, Meta is already training a 400B parameter model to compete directly with Open AI’s GPT-4. Over the coming months, they will also be releasing multiple models with new capabilities including multimodality, the ability to converse in multiple languages, a much longer context window, and stronger overall outputs.
Meta AI Assistant - An intelligent, free AI assistant used in the search box of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. While we wouldn’t normally cover consumer tech (🤧), Meta’s latest release is interesting to the B2B community for one reason in particular: Real-time edge inference. For many companies building and deploying LLMs, it’s generally assumed that training costs far outweigh that of running inference, but for Meta, it’s different. Meta has consistently leveraged ML to serve content to its users forever. But now, by integrating Meta AI into their app ecosystem of 4B MAUs, Meta’s allowing users to generate text, images, and complex search via LLMs on edge devices, something considered to be an achievement in and of itself.
For more on the advancements in LLMs, check out Danny’s post on what he calls “The LLM Adoption Curve.” Today, every company is an AI company (either reimagining traditional software or unlocking new workflows for greenfield use cases) thanks to the democratized access to AI and ML capabilities. Read more about what this adoption curve looks like here and in his
newsletter.Lastly, Priyanka has been diving deep into data management systems and the array of tools that have emerged around the ecosystem. Her latest post highlights the invaluable insights from The Composable Data Management System Manifesto. Check it out here and in her The Data Source newsletter.
